Its stately home and church of San Piero in Mercato belonged at one time to a small village with many watch towers. The picturesque idyll was destroyed by the wars between the Guelfi and Ghibellini in the year 1300. Only the Campanile della Pieva and the tower of the ¨La Gigliola¨estate can be seen today. For A long time the tower of the estate served its owners as a private chapel. In 1700 it was restored with much loving care. Dedicated in 1900 to Saint Enrico, the facade of the chapel is adorned with a bust of its patron saint. ¨La Gigliola¨ has always been a residence much admired by Florentine nobility and the Milani family was equally fascinated by the beauty of the estate. Surrounded as it is by a park of holm oaks, pine trees and ancient cypresses, wines, olives trees and even an antique tennis court within its 750 acre estate, the manor house reflects the wealth and variety of Tuscan traditions.
