Barbera del Monferrato Wine Trail
The Barbera appears in 1798, to draft the first ampelography of grape varieties cultivated in Piedmont Nuvolone accomplished by count, under the name of "Vitis vinifera Montisferratensis".
This name was due to the historical name of the hilly region, the main town today, the cultivation of the vine Barbera Monferrato.
In all likelihood, the grape variety Barbera was born from a spontaneous cross-seed oldest vines. And 'certain, however, that the origins of the Barbera grape is ancient, even if the documents that bear witness only to go back a few centuries ago.
Today, the Barbera wine is about 50% of wine production in Piemonte. It can be said, in fact, that Barbera is the wine of the Piedmont by definition to the point of identifying with the image of the wine region.
The production area of Barbera del Monferrato Superiore DOCG (established in 2008) lies in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria.
